Ultrasound imaging of the right side upper abdomen: Revisiting lying compared to standing erect with gastric filling!

Stephen Wolstenhulme, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Introduction

Ultrasound (US) is the first imaging modality for patients with suspected biliary and pancreatic disease. It is used to diagnose or exclude pathologu and aid the patient's management pathway. US scanners are accessible and cost effective. US is practitioner-dependent. The patient's body habitus and the presence of bowel gas may pose technical difficulties. Early disease in the gallbladder, extrahepatic biliary ducts and the pancreas may cause no biliary duct dilatation, making diagnoses challenging.
