UCL International Hepatology Ultrasound Course 2024

20th to 21st Sep 2024

Location - London, Royal Free Hospital

Over the last decades the understanding of liver disease and its management has improved considerably  thanks to a variety of diagnostic tools that have provided crucial information on diffuse liver disease, its severity and prognosis. The diagnostic accuracy for characterizing focal pathology has also sped up the time for diagnosis, hence improving patient’s prognosis.

This “package” of tools falls under the general term of “non-invasive assessment of liver disease” and includes B-Mode ultrasound, colour Doppler analysis, contrast enhanced ultrasound, liver and spleen elastography as well as the use of biomarkers and scoring systems. In other terms it includes all those instruments that non-invasively provide information on liver anatomy, physiology and pathology by visualising its structure and connections as well as being able to evaluate its elasticity that is a surrogate of fibrosis, and to a further extent, of portal hypertension hence directly correlating to the progression and prognosis of chronic liver disease.

Non-invasive assessment of liver disease has become a crucial tool in clinical practice and a fundamental part of the clinical knowledge of gastroenterologists and hepatologists. The “International Hepatology Ultrasound Course” focuses on the most important topics of clinical hepatology introducing the use of ultrasound in clinical practice as well as the use of more recent technologies such as elastography and fat quantification, highlighting the “pearls and pitfalls” of these important diagnostic resources. Delegates will have the opportunity to be guided by internationally recognised experts in the field of hepatology and non-invasive liver disease assessment on how to use ultrasound and elastography in liver disease in different clinical scenarios following the most recent guidelines with a clinical, practical and friendly approach. The 2-day course will start from the basics of medical ultrasound to normal liver anatomy and splanchnic circulation and further proceeding to discuss liver pathology from acute and chronic liver disease of different aetiologies to biliary pathology, vascular liver diseases, infectious and tropical disease with liver involvement, paediatrics and liver transplant. The second day will complete the pathological overview and then will be dedicated to the use of advanced techniques such as elastography, fat quantification and contrast enhanced ultrasound as well as the presentation of real clinical cases and how these techniques can lead to a rapid and accurate bedside diagnosis. Each day will be accompanied and completed by practical sessions on healthy volunteers and, depending on the availability, on real patients.

This course is valid for 15 CPD points.
