Barry Ward

Dr Barry Ward, PhD

Clinical Scientist, Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne

Barry is a clinical scientist, based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. He was born in Lincolnshire in 1965, and received a PhD in ultrasound physics from Loughborough University in 1991. After working on harmonic imaging at Darmstadt and Bath universities, he joined the Newcastle medical physics department in 1996, working on various aspects of ultrasound physics and scanning part-time in the vascular laboratory there. In 2001, he joined Philips Healthcare in Seattle, working on the development of the iU22 scanner.

He now leads a team of six physicists and technologists, looking after a wide range of ultrasound equipment in hospitals across the North East and Cumbria, and teaches on the MSc in Clinical Science course at Newcastle University.
