Dr Kevin Martin

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

Kevin trained as an Electronic Engineer in the 1970s, gaining a BSc and PhD from Bangor University (formerly known as the ‘University College of North Wales’). He joined the Ultrasonics section of the Medical Physics Department at Newcastle General Hospital in 1978.  Kevin then moved to Leicester in 1991, retiring as Head of Instrumentation of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Medical Physics Department in 2012.

Kevin has always been passionate about ultrasound education. He is a co-author of ‘Diagnostic Ultrasound: Physics and Equipment’, a key ultrasound physics text for trainee Clinical Scientists and Sonographers. His enthusiasm for ultrasound physics and instrumentation has inspired numerous Clinical Scientist trainees to specialise in ultrasound. For many years, he was heavily involved in the training of NHS Clinical Scientists, spending time as Chief Examiner for the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) Clinical Scientist training scheme.

Kevin joined BMUS Council in 1998 and has supported the Society in a variety of roles, including President of the Society from 2006-2008 and Editor in Chief of Ultrasound, the BMUS journal, from 2012-2016.

Honorary Membership is awarded in recognition of Kevin’s contributions to ultrasound training, based on his longstanding services to BMUS, and ongoing contributions to ultrasound research and education.
