Clinical Audit in Ultrasound Guidance Document 2025

24th Nov 2025

A new BMUS document, Combined Guidance for the Safe Use of Medical Ultrasound, has been published to help ultrasound departments promote safe, consistent and high-quality practice. Reflecting the changing landscape of sonography, the guidance provides quick access to and summary of key national recommendations for ultrasound managers/leads and staff as the profession continues to diversify through new training routes and international recruitment.

It emphasises professional accountability, ethical employment, and the importance of structured support for those new to UK practice. The document also highlights the role of preceptorship, continuing professional development, and adherence to recognised national standards from BMUS, the Society of Radiographers and the Royal College of Radiologists.

With sections on equipment quality assurance, prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders and safe practice beyond traditional radiology departments, the guidance provides a comprehensive reference for those leading and developing ultrasound services.
