AI Clinical interest Group (CIG)

Introduction

As of early 2025, BMUS has had a clinical interest group with a specific focus on AI and its integration into medical imaging.

A multi-disciplinary group containing physicists, equipment manufacturers, educationalist and clinicians with an over-arching ambition to monitor the movements of AI in medical ultrasound and to ensure our membership are informed regarding relevant changes, legislation and guidelines in this rapidly evolving landscape.

We are also keen to hear from you, if you have an AI product/project you are wanting advice on or collaboration with as we looking to try and help researchers, industry and educational institutions connect to one another

Scope of group

  • Overarching ambition to keep abreast of the movements in the field of AI in healthcare
  • To provide expert opinion for BMUS on matters relating to artificial intelligence in all aspects of ultrasound
  • Discuss new technologies as they arise and encourage adoption or raise concerns to benefit/protect both the membership of BMUS and its patients
  • Produce guidance on the use and misuse of AI applications
    • Encourage the production of evidence for applications prior to rolling out as patient facing
  • Monitor legislation pertaining to AI in healthcare.
  • Encourage and support education around the topic of AI in ultrasound
  • Act as a matchmaker between manufacturers/startups, researchers and clinicians/physicists to help develop collaborations and encourage early engagement
  • Encourage collaboration with other stakeholder groups and feedback to this group from other AI interest groups, such as RCR, SCoR, AXREM, RCOG, IPEM and CASE
  • Engage with regulatory bodies (Such as NICE) to highlight systems and software to assess for clinical impact
