Manifesto:

Joining the BMUS council would be a wonderful opportunity to continue to contribute to the ultrasound community nationally by helping to shape the future of clinical ultrasound practice, education and research while supporting BMUS’s charitable objectives.

I am an enthusiastic Consultant Radiologist currently pursuing a part-time PhD focused on the quality of ultrasound for hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance.

I am passionate about ultrasound education, serving as my department’s ultrasound training lead for radiology residents, publishing in RADReview (“Ultrasound scanning of the appendix”), presenting at national and international meetings and delivering invited ultrasound talks at BMUS and BSGAR. I am co-leading the upcoming BMUS 2025 bowel ultrasound workshop and previously co-organised the BMUS HCC surveillance study day, as well as establishing a local appendix ultrasound course. Furthermore, my research is centred on gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary ultrasound. As RADIANT co-chair, I led national multicentre projects and collaborated with BMUS. In addition, I have successfully secured funding for ultrasound research. Nationally, I have served on committees and subcommittees, including RADIANT, BMUS, and BSGAR, gaining experience both as co-lead and committee member.

This wide range of experience would allow me to make a positive contribution to the BMUS Council by advancing ultrasound practice, education, and research.

Experience:

I bring a strong track record of clinical expertise, leadership, education, and research experience that align closely with BMUS’s objectives and responsibilities of the Council.

Clinically, as a gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary radiologist, I have national expertise in bowel and appendix ultrasound, alongside extensive knowledge on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance through my PhD research. This perspective enables me to contribute practical clinical insights to Council discussions.

I have extensive leadership experience and work. As a previous Radiology Academic Network for Trainees (RADIANT) co-chair and recently as project supervisor, I led national multicentre projects, coordinated a team of radiology residents, established RADIANT’s identity and vision, organised the Annual General Meeting and supported project design and delivery. I have also held national roles on the BMUS Professional Standards Group, BSGAR Membership and Diversity Subcommittee, and BSGAR Bowel Ultrasound Subcommittee. These experiences have strengthened my skills in team building and governance, which I plan to bring to this trustee role.

I am adept at generating new ideas, improving processes, and translating them into actionable projects, as demonstrated by successfully leading and supervising multiple initiatives simultaneously.
I value collaboration with a wide range of healthcare professionals and see strength in diversity. Furthermore, I have greatly benefited from mentorship schemes as both mentee and mentor, while in supervising trainees, I have often learned from them through “reverse mentoring,” which has helped me stay attuned to different perspectives—a skill I would bring to keeping BMUS members’ interests at the heart of Council decisions. This is reflected in nominations such as “Unsung Hero for Women” and “Educational Supervisor of the Year”.

My combined clinical, academic, and educational experience equips me to contribute meaningfully to Council discussions and decisions, ensuring BMUS continues to advance ultrasound practice, research, and education while serving the interests of its members.

Background Information:

Alongside my clinical work, I have consistently sought opportunities to get involved with the wider radiology community. I have acted as a peer reviewer for radiology journals, including Clinical Radiology and European Radiology, as well selected to be a European Radiology Review Fellow before being appointed to the European Radiology Scientific Editorial Board. I also sit on a local research committee. These experiences have strengthened my ability to critically appraise and keep up to date with recent research developments.

I have extensive research experience with publications in peer-reviewed journals, including European Radiology, Clinical Radiology, and Radiology. My publications are supported by oral and poster presentations at national and international meetings, including BMUS, BSGAR, ESGAR, ECR, RSNA, and BSTI, with awards including the ESGAR 2020 Recommended Poster on “Ultrasound of the colon: when is bowel wall thickening concerning?” and the BSTI scientific prize. I have successfully obtained competitive funding for ultrasound research, giving me invaluable experience in grant writing and funding allocation.

I have also contributed to national guidelines as part of the group that developed the NHS England’s guidance on “Hepatocellular carcinoma: delivering quality ultrasound surveillance”.

In addition, I supervise research and master’s projects, and act as an educational supervisor, supporting the next generation of researchers and clinicians.
