The Irish Medical Ultrasound Society (IMUS) is the professional society for healthcare practitioners with an interest in diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound throughout Ireland.
IMUS exists to promote excellence in ultrasound practice through education, professional development, research, collaboration and the sharing of knowledge across all areas of medical ultrasound. The Society provides a forum for multidisciplinary engagement and aims to support healthcare professionals in delivering the highest standards of patient care.
Working in partnership with the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS), IMUS seeks to strengthen the ultrasound profession in Ireland while developing opportunities for education, networking, research and professional leadership.
Our Aim
The primary aim of IMUS is:
To advance education, research, innovation and best practice in medical ultrasound, promoting the safe and effective use of ultrasound for the benefit of patients and healthcare professionals throughout Ireland.
Our Objectives
IMUS seeks to achieve its aim by:
- Promoting excellence in ultrasound education and training.
- Supporting continuing professional development for ultrasound practitioners.
- Encouraging and facilitating research, audit and innovation in ultrasound practice.
- Promoting high standards of professional practice, quality assurance and patient safety.
- Providing opportunities for collaboration between ultrasound practitioners across all specialties.
- Supporting the development and dissemination of clinical guidance, standards and resources.
- Representing the interests of ultrasound practitioners within Ireland.
- Raising awareness of the value of medical ultrasound amongst healthcare professionals, policymakers and the public.
- Developing partnerships with national and international organisations that share the Society's objectives.

Working with BMUS
IMUS works closely with the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS) to support ultrasound education, professional development and best practice.
This collaboration enables members to benefit from a wider professional network and access to educational resources, events and initiatives that support the continued advancement of ultrasound practice across Ireland and the United Kingdom.
