Apply for Specialist Support in Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) Surveillance Ultrasound – with the BMUS Travelling Ambassador 2026
Our 2026 Travelling Ambassador is Alex Rourke, below are some suggested options for support that our Travelling Ambassador can provide during their visit (though other requirements could be met):
- Support with guidance and SOPs – Development or enhancement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for HCC ultrasound services, including best practices for HCC surveillance ultrasound.
- Advice on the NHS England guidance – How to apply the guidance to day-to-day practice
- Ultrasound LI-RADS and structured reporting – How to apply these to practice
- Tailored support sessions for small groups – Hands-on practical training and classroom teaching lectures on HCC surveillance ultrasound and structured reporting. Adaptable to departmental needs.
- Specialist 1-2-1 support with clinical lists – Focused guidance on HCC surveillance ultrasound scanning and reporting.
The BMUS Travelling Ambassador for HCC is available to promote best practice and training in specialist HCC surveillance ultrasound topics to centres that might not otherwise have access to such opportunities.

Alex Rourke
With a decade’s experience in ultrasound, Alex Rourke is a sonographer and Advanced Radiographer Practitioner at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Alex has taken the lead on HCC Surveillance at NUH since 2024, implementing a new scanning and reporting protocol for HCC surveillance ultrasound scans. He is part of the BMUS HCC ultrasound surveillance clinical interest group and is currently involved in local and national research. Alex has been faculty at BMUS study day, had poster presentations at BMUS and Association of Early Pregnancy Units conferences, and guest lectured at the University of Derby. Alex has a BSc in Diagnostic Radiography and a MSc in Medical Ultrasound. His clinical work includes gen med, obstetrics, gynaecology and cranial ultrasound, as well as ultrasound guided procedures in Interventional Radiology.
