Ultrasound (US) guided procedures: What are the barriers surrounding interventional practice for Sonographers?

Extended Sonography practices are driven by the growing demand. Innovation and technological advancements have extended the diagnostic capabilities of ultrasound as an imaging modality (Gibbs, 2013). A sonographer may undertake procedures that include elements of intervention such as prostate & breast biopsies, ultrasound guided drainages, Hysterosalpingo-Contrast-Sonography (HyCoSy) and Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) in areas of radiology shortages to enable service delivery in the growing population.

Although sonographer led practices exist, the extent of this practice is unknown. The Centre for Workforce Intelligence (CfWI) (2017) has found that departments do not collect data on those who are partaking in extended practice. This study intends to investigate the varied practice amongst sonographers nationally with regards to interventional practice, this will allow for an increase sum of knowledge; making individuals aware of practice across England. Moreover, it is aimed to highlight the barriers surrounding interventional ultrasound practice and to help find ways in overcoming them.

This survey is only for Sonographers who work in England and should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete. All respondents will remain anonymous and any personal information will remain confidential.  Responses to this survey are crucial, as the information collated will be useful to the whole profession. The views of the respondents will inform the shape of future practice, the author’s aim is to disseminate the outcomes of their research.

This is an independent piece of research and not the work of SCoR, and has been compiled as part of the final year postgraduate dissertation of an MSc (Medical Ultrasound) student at Kings College London.
