First Trimester Screening Survey

12th Feb 2021

Do you do the 'extended' scan, then this survey is particularly relevant to you.

Dear Colleagues,

We are asking for 15 minutes of your time to help with an important survey that will shape first trimester screening in the UK.

We are working with the NIHR to explore if first trimester fetal anomaly screening would be clinically effective and cost-effective for women in England.

In a recent survey, we found that over 75% of ultrasound units already perform some routine fetal anatomy assessment in the first trimester. However, at present no national recommendations exist on how this should be performed. Therefore, widespread variation in practice is seen across the country – in fact it is often individual sonographers that determine the level of screening. This also means that referral pathways to support this screening are often not developed.

In order to improve this situation, we would like to invite you to contribute to an online consensus procedure.

The objective is to develop recommendations for a standard anatomical protocol and basic screening standards. This will be based on our collective opinion, for those centres wishing to routinely offer first trimester anomaly screening.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us via email at

We would be grateful if you could please share this link with any colleagues you think may be interested in participating from your hospital or region.
