There are few cities in
Europe which offer the broad range of experience that can be found in
Manchester. This vibrant modern city dates back to Roman times, came to
prominence in the Victorian era and over the last fifteen years has become one
of the most exciting and interesting destinations for tourist and local alike.
Where once there were rundown mills and warehouses, there is now a plethora of
bars, restaurants and clubs catering for all tastes and preferences. Manchester
has the largest Chinatown outside San Francisco with the famous Yang Sing
Restaurant and the Gay Village provides lively and alternative entertainment
for all till the early hours of the morning.
Close to the city is Rusholme's Curry Mile with some of the best ethnic
restaurants outside India. Manchester has the best theatres outside London-in
fact many shows open here and go on to the capital. The old Cotton Exchange now
houses the exciting Royal Exchange Theatre and the recently opened Lowry at
Salford Quays has added two more to the city's total. The Halle orchestra was
founded here and has its home in the magnificent Bridgewater Hall, a
spectacular modem building with perfect acoustics and seating for 2,400. The
City Art Galleries, The Lowry, The Pumphouse and The Museum of Science and
Industry are just some of the great museums here in Manchester. The newly
opened Urbis housed in a very modem, futuristic building concentrates on city
living throughout the world. |
