FROM PROCEDURE TO PERSONAL IMPACT

A PERSONAL CASE STUDY NAVIGATING IATROGENIC COMPLICATIONS AND ASKS THE QUESTION - ARE WE READY FOR ADVANCED AND CONSULTANT PRACTICE?

Catherine Lee, University of Exeter, Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Background:

Adverse events in clinical practice are an inevitable reality, with many papers detailing the frequency and outcomes (including Second Victim Syndrome) for surgeons, yet their impact on Trainee Advanced and Consultant Practitioners is underexplored. This case study reflects on my experience as a Trainee Consultant Radiographer Sonographer involved in a diagnostic biopsy that resulted in a significant and unexpected adverse outcome for the patient.

Case Summary:

The study will describe how the clinical procedure was technically appropriate and aligned with best practice, but the aftermath challenged both my professional confidence and emotional resilience.
