BMUS Council

The trustees of the charity, who are also the directors of the company, are the Officers and other members of the Council of the Society. The overall strategic direction of BMUS is determined by the Council and all the key decisions in relation to the charitable activities of the society are taken by the Council. Council members are responsible for ensuring that the Society fulfills the aims and purposes as set out in the Memorandum of Agreement for BMUS. Click here to view this document.

BMUS Council is composed of three groups of individuals. The officers are members who have served on Council and have been chosen to hold positions of responsibility within the Society. There are five Officers: the President, President Elect, Past President, Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary (see below). The largest group on Council comprises those elected by the membership. There are seven of these members. The Articles of Association of the Society are prescriptive regarding the disciplines elected and ensure fair representation. The third group consists of those who sit on Council in a non-voting capacity who are present by virtue of their position in another society of professional group or in their capacity as organisers of the Annual Scientific Meetings. Their number is necessarily variable, but a full meeting of Council, held quarterly, would see approximately twenty professionals seated at the table.

Council is the forum at which decisions are made about the Society's professional activities. The various and varied Committees of BMUS meet independently, discuss proposals and present these with recommendations to Council for final approval. Council is a forum for discussion, debate and decision with the interests of the membership as its central tenet.

As a member of the Society, you have the ability to exercise influence via a number of routes. Firstly you can discuss you thoughts and ideas with a member of Council who would then take them, as your representative, to one of the Committees or to Council. Secondly, you may stand for council yourself, or you can write a letter or article for the Journal. Finally, you can attend the Annual Scientific Meeting and use your vote on the issues on the agenda. The Society belongs to the membership and there is a real opportunity to influence ideas and policies.

Scientific & Education Committee

The Committee advises the Council on matters relating to the development, practice, teaching and monitoring of ultrasound in the various fields where it is used for clinical or research purposes. The committee meets three times a year. Council appoints the chairman for a term of three years and the post holder is a Council member. There is a maximum of nine members on the committee who must include an Honorary Secretary and at least four other members of the society. Members must include a sonographer, medical practitioner and a physicist and they serve three years in the first instance. The balance of the committee is made up of members who can reflect the range of interests of the society.

One of the major roles of the committee is to oversee the programme of BMUS workshops and study days. These meetings are usually organised by BMUS themselves but may be held in association with other bodies with an interest in ultrasound education and development. The committee welcomes suggestions for meetings and is keen to encourage and aid those wishing to organise appropriate workshops and study days.

The committee also reviews and contributes to publications and guidelines on ultrasound topics of a general nature and which may affect the general practice of BMUS members. These publications are available to the membership through the website.

Training Committee
The work of the Training Committee has now been taken over by the Scientific & Education Committee. Please direct any queries to the Chair of the S&E Committee.

The Training committee was formed to address the growing need for training to prevent the misuse of ultrasound by those not properly trained to practice and in line with the BMUS aim to advance education in the field of ultrasound. It aims to raise the profile of training issues for (non-radiological) medical groups in diagnostic ultrasound throughout the UK. Also to develop & maintain links with other medical groups using ultrasound, their professional societies, colleges, training committees and other educational groups. It looks to encourage professional societies, colleges & faculties to publicise the need for proper training in ultrasound amongst their members. These aims are put into practice by:
  • Guiding and informing groups about the requirements of proper training programmes and how to set up training programmes.
  • Providing expert advice on ultrasound training issues, including input to UK strategies on ultrasound training for medical groups.
  • Overseeing the organisation of educational events to raise the profile of training issues.
  • Developing, and advising on the development of training materials and programmes.
  • Reviewing & contributing to publications and guidelines on ultrasound training issues for medical groups.
The Training Committee developed a template business case for those clinical specialties intending to train SpRs in medical ultrasound, the main thrust being the provision of a new or improved ultrasound service. Both theoretical and practical training are required. The business case primarily focuses on the practical aspects of ultrasound training for non-radiology SpRs, including assessment and mentoring.

Safety Committee

In 1998 a safety group was set up to advise the membership on safety issues in ultrasound and to make recommendations to them. The group consists of, at most, 6 members, of whom one must be a medical practitioner, one a sonographer and one a scientist. The Safety group's remit is to provide informed advice to the President and Council of BMUS on matters of ultrasound safety, to inform the BMUS membership about safety issues, and to be a focus for action in the UK in matters of ultrasound safety. In addition it reviews the current literature on safety matters. The safety group regularly publishes a statement on the "Safe use, and potential hazards of diagnostic ultrasound", and has produced two guidelines one on "Safety for trainees using live subjects", and a second for the "Safe use of diagnostic equipment". This second Guideline document includes guidance on the use of the safety indices (thermal index and mechanical index) that are displayed on modern imaging equipment, and contains a rationale for the recommendations made. These documents are available on the website, and have been published in the BMUS Bulletin.
